Jeffrey P. Martinez became the Director of Athletics and Physical Education at the University of Redlands in July of 2000. Having served on the Bulldog staff since 1983, Martinez moved into this role as a seasoned member of the department. While working as the Head Athletic Trainer, he was promoted to Assistant Director of Athletics and later named Associate Director of Athletics. He also attained the rank of full professor in the spring of 1997. In 2014, he handed off the Physical Education responsibilities to faculty member, Tom Whittemore, allowing Martinez to focus more time on other projects.
Since moving into administration, Martinez has served as the chair of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Athletic Administrators Group and the chair of the NCAA Championships Committee. He joined the NCAA DIII Management Council and became the chair of that group as well. Currently, he is a member of the NCAA DIII Strategic Alliance and Matching Grant Committee.
Under Martinez’ leadership, the Bulldogs have won three SCIAC All-Sports Trophies (2005, 2007, and 2008) and have finished as high as 16th in the annual NACDA Directors’ Cup race.
In 2012, he was named the NACDA DIII West Region Director of Athletics of the Year.
Beyond his day-to-day work at the University, Martinez recently co-chaired the Special Olympics Host Town Redlands Organizing Committee and volunteers as a member of the Valley Prep School Board of Trustees.
Martinez also coached the women's golf team during its first four seasons, helping the program grow from an emerging sport at Redlands to a roster of 12 competitive players.
While working as an athletic trainer, Martinez served as District Treasurer of the Managing Board for the Far West Athletic Trainers Association. He was a host athletic trainer for the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games and served as an associate with the Justin Mobile Sports Medicine Program, working with the medical team for the CART/Fed Ex Indy racing series for 10 years.
An Albuquerque native, Martinez earned his Bachelor of Science from Utah State University in 1982 and received his Master of Science from the University of Arizona in 1983, where he served as the football graduate assistant athletic trainer.
In his free time, Martinez enjoys spending time with his family and golfing. He and his wife, Susan, who is an operations manager for Bon Appétit, have three children: Ashley, J.J., and Whitney. J.J. graduated from Redlands in 2008 and is married to fellow alum Alison Wise. Whitney also completed her degree as a Bulldog, graduating in 2010.
Jeff and Susan currently reside in Redlands.
