Bulldog Basketball Teams Gain Six All-SCIAC Awards
It was announced earlier this week that four women’s and
two men’s basketball players from the University of Redlands
landed on the All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (SCIAC) Teams as voted on by the head coaches.
For the women, sophomore guard Mariah Barbetti-Cort (Ventura, CA)
and freshman forward Courtney Carroll (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA)
earned spots on the First Team, while junior forward Meghan Yetman
(Danville, CA) and junior guard Ali Bueno (San Jose, CA) garnered
Second Team honors. On the men’s side, junior guard Patrick
Coffey (San Carlos, CA) represented the Bulldogs on the First Team,
with sophomore forward Matt Dietrich earning Second Team
honors.
In 14 conference games, Carroll led the team in scoring with 11.1
points per game, boasting 156 points off of a .438 shooting
percentage. She also shot .772 from the charity stripe, converting
44 of her 57 opportunities against SCIAC opponents. Carroll ranked
second in rebounds with 6.6 per game, while tallying 23 assists, 17
blocks and 13 steals.
Playing in only 11 SCIAC games, Barbetti-Cort also made an impact
in her inaugural season with the Bulldogs. She led the team in
rebounds with 8.0 per game and scored 10.4 points per game. She
posted a shooting percentage of .443, which included a clip of .471
from beyond the arc. A primary ball-handler for Redlands,
Barbetti-Cort distributed 35 assists, while making 15 steals and
four blocks. Among the conference players, she sits second in
rebounding and fourth in assists.
Yetman earns her second All-SCIAC award with her spot on the Second
Team. In 14 conference games, she ranked second on the team in
scoring with a 9.3 average, shooting .486 from the field. She also
tallied 4.4 rebounds per game while handing out 32 assists.
Gaining her firs All-Conference award of her career, Bueno ranked
third on the team in scoring with 9.6 points per game in 14 SCIAC
contests. She boasted a .404 field-goal percentage to go along with
a .442 mark from beyond the arc. Leading both the team and the
conference, she knocked down 38 three-pointers. In addition, she
went 5-for-6 from the line and came up with 23 rebounds. Bueno
delivered 20 assists and captured 16 steals to go along with three
blocks.
The Redlands women’s basketball team finished second in the
conference standings with an 11-3 record and advanced to the SCIAC
Postseason Tournament for the second year in a row.
For the men, Coffey gains his inaugural All-SCIAC award with his
spot on the First Team. In 14 conference games, he ranked first
among the Bulldogs and second in conference with 16.6 points per
game. He shot .460 from the field, converting 80 shots on 174
attempts. He also sank 26 three-pointers and 46 free-throws. In
addition, Coffey came up with 38 rebounds, 32 steals, 28 assists,
and three blocks. With 2.29 steals per game, he landed second among
the conference competitors.
Dietrich also earns his first All-Conference honor, landing on the
Second Team as the Bulldogs’ second-leading scorer with 13.9
points per game. He shot .439 from the field while knocking down 49
of his 60 free throws for an .817 clip. He added 61 rebounds, 17
assists, 21 steals, and one block.
With a 6-8 showing against conference opponents, the Bulldogs men
took sixth in the standings, but wrapped up the 2009 season with an
exciting 63-62 victory over fifth-place Occidental College.
The All-SCIAC teams are nominated and voted on by the head coaches
of the eight conference programs at their end-of-season meetings.
