Redlands Captures Third SCIAC All-Sports Trophy in Four Years
The University of Redlands won its third Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Combined All-Sports
Trophy in four years by earning five first-place showings and
multiple top-three finishes. In addition, the Bulldogs captured the
women’s trophy by one point while tying
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges for the men’s trophy.
“We are very excited to win the All-Sports Trophy again,
particularly in such a close race,” commented Director of
Athletics Jeff Martinez. “It was a total team effort by
everyone in our department with nearly all of our teams finishing
in the top half of the conference. We are grateful to have the
support of the institutional administration and faculty who
consistently demonstrate their appreciation for the value of an
excellent intercollegiate, student-athlete experience.”
The Bulldog women tallied 51 points, giving them a one-point
advantage over second-place CMS. Redlands gained women’s
championships from softball and track & field, along with a
co-championship in women’s tennis. The Bulldogs also finished
among the top three in cross country, swimming & diving,
soccer, and basketball. This marks the third time that Redlands has
won the women’s trophy competition, which began in
1976-77.
The men’s teams captured co-championships in soccer and
football en route to earning 55.5 points, which put them in a tie
with CMS. The Bulldogs gained significant points from the
second-place finishes of water polo, swimming & diving,
baseball, golf, tennis, and track & field. This is
Redlands’ sixth men’s trophy since the inception of the
award in 1972-73.
The Bulldogs won their first combined All-Sports Trophy in 2004-05
with a school record-tying eight conference championships.
The official trophy presentation will take place on Wednesday, May
7, at Los Serranos Country Club as part of the SCIAC Awards
Banquet.
The SCIAC All-Sports Trophy is determined by the points earned for
each sport’s finish among the conference schools. The SCIAC
champion receives eight points, with second place earning six
points, third receiving five points, etc., to eighth place, which
earns no points. Any school that does not sponsor a conference
sport loses one point for that sport. The conference sponsors 19
sports.
