Ninth-Inning Rally Not Enough as Bulldogs Suffer Loss to Thunderbirds

With pitching and defense dominating a non-conference exhibition baseball game between the University of Redlands and the University of British Columbia in Redlands on Sunday, the Thunderbirds broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the ninth with a grand slam and eventually downed the Bulldogs, 5-3.

British Columbia took an early lead in the first with a two-out single that drove in a runner from second base.

From that point on, the Maroon and Gray’s pitching staff held the Thunderbirds scoreless until the ninth.

Redlands got on the board in the fourth inning due to swift base running by sophomore outfielder Brandon Owashi (San Diego, CA). Owashi reached on a single, stole second and then advanced to third on a groundout. Senior outfielder Corey Vane (Simi Valley, CA) grounded out to second but drove in Owashi and tied the game at one apiece.

Entering the game in the top of the ninth, senior utility player Will Wetmore (Santa Cruz, CA) served as the sixth Bulldog pitcher of the afternoon and got into trouble, loading the bases before surrendering a grand slam to left-center field. Down by four runs, the Bulldogs rallied back in the ninth as senior pitcher/infielder Jon Eubanks (Chula Vista, CA) singled and stole a base before freshman shortstop Chase Tucker (Poway, CA) kept the inning alive by reaching first and advancing on an errant throw. Senior outfielder Jordan Snider (Temecula, CA) then drove a ball up the middle, scoring Tucker. With the bases loaded, however, Vane was unable to convert on a ground ball to second as the game ended with a fielder’s choice play.

Owashi enjoyed success at the plate, going 3-for-5 with one run scored. Freshman pitcher Josh Snyder (Englewood, CO) started the game on the mound and allowed one run in two innings of work while striking out two.

Redlands (1-2) opens up Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play on Friday at The Yard with the first of a three-game set against Occidental College. The first pitch is scheduled to be thrown at 2:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Bulldogs travel to Eagle Rock for a doubleheader against the Tigers with game one set to begin at 11 a.m.
