Bulldog Baseball Blanked Twice by No. 17 Cal Lutheran

Offensive production proved hard to come by for the University
of Redlands baseball team against No. 17 Cal Lutheran
University on Saturday as the Bulldogs suffered two losses by
scores of 0-11 and 0-2 at The Yard in Redlands.
Redlands struggled on the second day of the three-game series
against the Kingsmen following a solid 5-3 victory in Thousand Oaks
on Friday.
The Bulldogs could not push runners across in the first bout as the
team fell, 0-11.
Cal Lutheran jumped on top early, scoring four runs in the first
two innings and burst for three in the fourth, two in the fifth and
two in the eighth.
Senior infielder Tony Stutevoss (Portland, OR) and senior
outfielder Cory Vane (Simi Valley, CA) each had standout
performances from the dish for the Maroon and Gray, notching two
hits apiece.
Paul Hartman and Nick Reitz led the Kingsmen with three hits apiece
while Richard Michelin plated three on two hits.
On the mound, freshman pitcher Josh Snyder (Englewood, CO) was
tagged with the loss, going 4.1 innings while giving up five earned
runs.
Mike Roe went the distance for Cal Lutheran, tossing a shutout
while allowing just six hits.
In the rubber match, both teams’ pitchers dueled as the
Kingsmen took the back end of the doubleheader, 2-0.
Cal Lutheran scored two in the first, and those runs proved to be
the final of the afternoon for either team.
The Maroon and Gray stranded a plethora of Kingsman runners as Cal
Lutheran left eight on base.
Despite receiving incredible contributions from the defense, the
Bulldogs could not put the ball past the Kingsmen as Redlands
racked up just three hits, which came from Vane, senior outfielder
Matt Goldstein (Lincoln, CA) and junior shortstop Zack Braband
(Alameda, CA).
Both junior pitcher/infielder Michael Lessig (Fountain Hills, AZ)
and senior pitcher Kevin Bissell (Orange, CA) pitched brilliantly.
Lessig garnered the starting nod and struck out nine in seven
innings of work while allowing a mere two runs. Bissell fanned four
batters in just two innings of work and held Cal Lutheran scoreless
with two hits.
For the Kingsmen, Chase Tigert pitched a complete-game shutout,
striking out seven.
Redlands (16-11, 7-5 SCIAC) contests Chapman University on Thursday
afternoon at The Yard. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
