Bulldog Baseball Struggles in Exhibition Game against British Columbia
Amidst the blustery yet sunny conditions, the University of
Redlands baseball team hosted the University of British Columbia
(CAN) in an exhibition game today at The Yard. Head Coach Scott
Laverty took the opportunity to mix up the lineup, utilizing 14
field players and five pitchers, but the Bulldogs struggled against
the heavy-hitting Thunderbirds and lost by a score of 3-20.
After going down by four runs, Redlands responded with a two-run
showing in the bottom of the third inning. With two runners on,
senior short stop Zack Braband (Alameda, CA) drove in sophomore
second baseman Chase Tucker (Poway, CA) with his single to left
center. Senior catcher Jefre Johnson (Canby, OR) followed suit and
plated junior left fielder Brandon Owashi (San Diego, CA) on a
single through the left side.
In the eighth inning, the Bulldogs managed one more run as graduate
student designated player Matt Hughes (Westminster, CA) singled up
the middle to score sophomore center fielder Marcus Himelhoch
(Beaverton, OR), who had doubled to right center with two outs.
However, this was close as the Bulldogs would get, following
British Columbia's back-to-back innings of five and 10 runs,
respectively.
Although the Redlands defense struggled with five errors, it turned
four double plays on the day.
The Maroon and Gray mustered nine hits but left seven on base. J.
Johnson and Tucker both went 2-for-2.
Sophomore pitcher Josh Snyder (Denver, CO) threw four innings and
allowed seven hits and three earned runs while striking out four in
the loss.
Redlands (6-2, 4-2 SCIAC) returns to Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action on Friday when
it hosts Cal Lutheran University at 2:30 p.m.
