Redlands Basketball Wins at Caltech

The University of Redlands men’s and women’s basketball teams took to the road this week, picking up victories over Caltech for the season sweep against the Beavers. Due to an impressive effort by the Beavers, the Bulldog men escaped Pasadena with a 97-88 win in overtime on Wednesday. On the following night, the women cruised to a 76-42 win in yet another solid outing to remain tied atop the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) standings.

After a strong start in the first half, Redlands entered halftime with a small yet comfortable five-point lead. The team went 15-for-35 from the field and put away four three-pointers in a solid offensive showing. However, Caltech countered in the second half with an impressive 63% shooting performance that included 40 points to the Bulldogs’ 35 to force overtime. In the extra period, Redlands came out firing, not wanting to be the victim of the Beavers’ first SCIAC victory in 23 years. The Bulldogs shot 57.1% in overtime as Caltech fell to 25%, resulting in a 13-4 advantage for Redlands.

Senior guard Dave Thomas (Santa Cruz, CA) and junior forward Dan Selway (Villa Park, CA) led the way for the Bulldogs, finishing with 26 points apiece. They also boasted stellar defensive performances with Selway notching six steals and Thomas grabbing four. Senior forward Matt Loretz (Los Altos, CA) was the only other Bulldog in double figures with 10 points. In addition, junior forward Travis Miller (Coto de Caza, CA) pulled down a team-high 11 boards.

On Thursday, the women returned to conference action eager to capture a victory after Tuesday’s heartbreaking loss to Chapman University. Despite only shooting 37.1% in the first half, the Bulldogs relied on their scrappy defense to shut down Caltech and gain a 21-point lead. During the second period, Redlands improved its shooting to 51.5% while utilizing 14 players in the rotation. Overall, the Bulldogs gained 38 points from their bench and scored 40 points in the paint en route to the 76-42 victory.

Four Bulldogs ended in double figures with senior guard Heather Lokar (Covina, CA) leading the way with 11 points on 4-fo5 shooting. Senior guard Valerie Katayama (Huntington Beach, CA), sophomore forward Meghan Yetman (Danville, CA) and freshman forward Allison Clark (Altadena, CA) each finished with 10 points. Katayama also added six rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Bulldog basketball returns home on Saturday to host Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in a conference doubleheader. The women (15-5, 8-1 SCIAC) tip off at 5 p.m., followed by the men (9-10, 4-4 SCIAC) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night also marks the annual Hatfield Buick GMC Shootout, in which two lucky fans will shoot baskets for a new car.
