Redlands Mens Golfs Canavan Lauded as PING Second-Team All-American
University of Redlands junior Ross Canavan (Redlands, CA)
garnered PING Second-Team All-America accolades after occupying a
share of 15th place at the 2009 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf
Championships in Port St. Lucie, FL, according to an announcement
made today by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).
Canavan, who helped lead the team to a ninth-place finish at the
NCAA Championships this year, shot scores of 76, 72, 78 and 70 to
finish the 72-hole event with a cumulative total of 296. After
shooting par for the course on the front nine in the final round,
he birdied four holes while sustaining two bogies to finish the
round at 2 under. His performance on the final day of competition
helped the ninth-ranked Bulldogs track down No. 6
Skidmore College (NY) and finish ahead of the Thoroughbreds. For
his excellence in conference play, he earned a place on the
All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC)
First Team for the first time in his collegiate career. Last year,
Canavan received PING First-Team All-America honors, Second-Team
All-SCIAC laurels and PING All-West Region accolades.
Redlands’ performance at the national tournament marked the
sixth time in the past seven years that the Bulldogs have finished
among the top 10. Of those top-10 finishes, four have been as
national runners-up.
The SCIAC landed four others on the PING All-America teams as the
No. 3 University of La Verne placed three on the First Team while
No. 14 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges gained a First-Team
selection in Tain Lee.
