No. 17 Redlands Mens Golf Debuts with Fourth-Place Finish at CSUSM Invitational
The No. 17 University of Redlands men’s golf team placed
fourth out of 12 teams at the CSU San Marcos Invitational, which
took place on Monday and Tuesday at the San Luis Rey Downs Golf
Course in Bonsall.
Redlands compiled a final team score of 902 on the par-72,
6,750-yard course, competing against a field comprised mostly of
NCAA Division II and NAIA programs. After the first two rounds on
Monday, the Bulldogs stood in fifth (600), but a strong final day
helped them jump Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Senior Ross Canavan (Redlands, CA) led the Bulldogs with a
12th-place performance, carding scores of 73, 71 and 78 to finish
at a 6-over-par 222. In addition, Canavan paced the field in pars
with 39 on the event.
Junior Alex Hedlund (Arlington, WA) tied for 16th (225) while
junior Todd Steller (Poway, CA) wound up in a tie for 20th overall
(227). Juniors Tom Sponheim (Redlands, CA) and Scott Peña
(Encinitas, CA) tied for 29th and 32nd, respectively, with scores
of 232 and 233.
Holy Names University placed five golfers in the top 10 to cruise
to a first-place finish by 15 strokes (868).
Redlands takes a week off from competition before traveling to the
Sierra La Verne Golf Course in La Verne for the Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) 18-hole No. 1 on
Thursday, Feb. 18. The first tee time is set for 12 noon.
