Three Redlands Men’s Golfers Gain All-Conference Honors, Sanders Named Freshman of the Year

It was announced late Monday that three members of the Redlands men's golf program earned All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) honors for their on-course accomplishments during the 2011 season.  Freshman Jeremy Sanders (Chatsworth, CA) was named the "Ken Sherman Freshman of the Year" and joined senior Alex Hedlund on the First Team, while senior Todd Steller (Poway, CA) collected a Second-Team nod.

Sanders burst onto the SCIAC scene in his first season and wrapped up the 2011 campaign as the sixth-best overall swinger.  He shot an average of 74.3 in SCIAC competition while signing his score card as the top Bulldog in two conference outings.   In addition to his First-Team nod, Sanders was voted by the conference coaches as the Freshman of the Year.  He finished ahead of all other first-year players in SCIAC average score, score differential, and shots over par.

Collecting his third All-Conference selection of his career, Hedlund earns his inaugural First-Team accolade in his final campaign.  He shot 75 or better in six rounds while finishing as the Bulldogs' top scorer during three SCIAC tournaments.  Hedlund finished out conference competition as the fourth-best golfer among the SCIAC, registering a 73.9 average round in seven rounds.

With his first career All-Conference award, Steller lands on the Second Team after serving as a consistent force for the Maroon and Gray.   He finished as the team's No. 2 scorer in four conference competitions and ranked first among the Bulldogs in one outing.  The four-year veteran placed seventh among all conference players by posting an average round of 74.4.

The Bulldogs finished third at the recent SCIAC 36-hole Championships to place second overall in the standings.  Redlands now awaits the NCAA's announcement regarding one of six at-large bids to compete in the NCAA Championships, which take place May 10-13 in Greensboro, NC.
