No. 5 Bulldog Men’s Golf Wins Third SCIAC 18-hole Tournament
The fifth-ranked University of Redlands men's golf team edged out Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) foe Cal Lutheran University by two strokes at the SCIAC 18-hole No. 3 Tournament en route to its second victory of the young 2012 season with Thursday's combined score of 292. The Maroon and Gray put together a solid performance at Industry Hills Country Club, leading the field in nearly every statistical category, including par threes (3.25) and par fours (4.26), as well as birdies (18) and eagles (1).
While picking up his second medalist honor of the year, freshman Perry Johnson (Lake Forest, IL) shot a career-low round of 68. The rookie made his way around the links with a group-best scoring average of 2.75 on the par threes, and dropped in an eagle and four birdies in the process.
Freshman Bobby Holden (Simi Valley, CA) finished second for the Maroon and Gray for the fourth straight match, posting a 72 to tie for third overall on Thursday.
As the No. 3 Bulldog with score of 75, sophomore Jeremy Sanders (Chatsworth, CA) led all SCIAC swingers with five birdies. The squad's captain already has recorded 10 rounds of 75 or less thus far into the 2011-12 campaign.
Second-year golfer Mike Caston Jr. (Escondido, CA) tallied two sub-40 halves (39-38) by leading the U of R with 12 pars as one of the most consistent players.
Sophomore Jeremy Gomberg (Los Altos, CA) and freshman Anthony Estes (San Pedro, CA) finished as the team's No. 5 and No. 6 players, recording rounds of 79 and 84, respectively.
Redlands looks forward to hosting the annual St. Paddy's Day Individual Tournament at Tukwet Canyon Golf Club, starting on March 17.
