The No. 4 University of Redlands men's golf program kicked off its 2012-13 season with a fourth-place showing at the Embry-Riddle Arizona Co-Ed Invitational on Sunday and Monday. After three rounds, the Bulldog swingers combined for a total of 888, just 12 strokes off the lead.
Sophomore Bobby Holden (Simi Valley, CA) led the charge for Redlands, finishing tied for third overall. Recording rounds of 70, 74 and 71, Holden finished at one under par for the tournament. During the invitational, he ranked tied for fourth among the field for par-five scoring by notching an average of 4.75. He also sank the second-most birdies of all competitors, tallying 13 in all.
Fellow sophomore Perry Johnson (Lake Forest, IL) finished tied for 12th overall, signing his scorecard for the three rounds at eight over par Like Holden, Johnson was very successful on the par-five holes, notching a 4.83 scoring average over the weekend.
Sophomore swinger Andrew Shoup (Huntington Beach, CA) put together a solid first-ever showing for the Maroon and Gray, finishing just one shot behind Johnson at nine over par. With rounds of 75, 72 and 78, Shoup notched the second-most birdies on the team with 10.
Junior Nick Johnson (La Jolla, CA) and freshman John McCord (Oakland, CA) wrapped up the invitational at 11 and 22 over par, respectively. In addition to shooting the lone Bulldogs' eagle, Johnson closed out his weekend with an impressive final round of 70.
Redlands competes again on October 15-16 at the Twin Oaks Golf Club for the Cal State San Marcos Classic.
