Redlands Men's Golf Impresses with Second-Place Showing at CSU San Marcos Invite

The 13th-ranked University of Redlands men's golf team finished up its fall schedule on Tuesday afternoon, posting a second-place finish in the NAIA-heavy Cal State San Marcos Invitational at Twin Oaks Golf Course.  With sophomore Bobby Holden (Simi Valley, CA) firing off an opening score of 66 to tie the school record, the Bulldogs completed all three rounds at 293 or below for a 54-hole total of 860, which was just 10 strokes off of the first-place hosts.

Behind three players from NCAA Division I UCLA, Holden posted a combined score of 209 (66-70-73) to tie for fourth overall.  In addition, he was the top finisher among the team competition for par fives at 4.58 while earning 35 pars on the two-day tournament.  Holden also was one of five players to sink an eagle on the par-72 course.

The Bulldogs boasted a trio of steady competitors that tied for 18th overall, as junior Nick Johnson (La Jolla, CA), sophomore Andrew Shoup (Marina, CA), and junior Jeremy Gomberg (Mountain View, CA) all signed their respective scorecards with a three-round total of 217.

Shoup led the Bulldogs with a 3.87 average on par-four holes to go along with the most birdies among the squad with 15.

Johnson notched 34 pars on the tournament and shined on the third round with a career-low score of 68.

Gomberg tallied 14 birdies while earning a 4.83 average on par fives.

Redlands looks forward to resuming competition in the spring when it opens the 2013 schedule with the first of two Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) 36-hole tournaments on Feb. 23-24 at Industry Hills Golf Course.
