Bulldog Men’s Soccer Plays Pomona-Pitzer to Scoreless Stalemate

The University of Redlands men’s soccer team drew, 0-0, with Pomona-Pitzer Colleges in Wednesday’s Senior Night match in Redlands.

Prior to the start of the contest, the program honored its seven seniors: goalkeeper Evan Hobson (San Diego, CA), forward Colin Corey (Beaverton, OR), midfielder Cale Rodriguez (Norwalk, CA), forward Nick Gundersen (Park City, UT), midfielder Will Kelly (Seattle, WA), defender Andrew Lazarz (Sammamish, WA) and defender Jeff Willey (Medina, WA).

Redlands came out swinging in the first half, ripping 12 shots to Pomona-Pitzer’s five. Both teams traded blows in the second stanza, and despite numerous chances, neither squad could find the back of the net.

In the first overtime period, the Maroon and Gray earned a golden opportunity to pull off the victory. With less than 10 seconds left to play in the frame, junior defender Danny Connors (Lake Oswego, OR) scrambled to take a corner kick, and the ball eventually found the head of Kelly. Kelly put a head on the ball with one tick left on the clock, but it careened off the crossbar, giving the Sagehens a breath of new life in the match.

Pomona-Pitzer earned an equal opportunity in the final moment of the second overtime as Zach Mirman uncorked a shot that Hobson turned away.

Notably, the Bulldogs took an astounding 11 corners throughout the match and edged the Sagehens in shots, 29-22.

Pomona-Pitzer (12-3-1, 10-1-1 SCIAC) hosts a Cal Lutheran University team that is fighting for a bid into the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Redlands (8-6-4, 7-3-3 SCIAC) concludes its regular season with an 11 a.m. match against the University of La Verne on Saturday in La Verne.
