Redlands Mens Soccer Trio Earns NSCAA All-Region Citations

Senior defender Jeff Willey (Medina, WA), senior midfielder Cale
Rodriguez (Norwalk, CA) and sophomore midfielder Cody Carlson
(Burbank, CA) of the University of Redlands men’s soccer team
received National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)
All-West Region Third-Team honors for their stellar play during the
2009 season, as announced today by the NSCAA.
Willey, the team’s lone repeat All-Region honoree, returned
to defensive third after playing up in the midfield for the
beginning of the season. His leadership and experience paid
dividends as the Redlands defense allowed just 1.18 goals per game.
He scored three goals and dished out three assists for a total of
nine points on the year. Willey has gained First-Team All-SCIAC
laurels in each of the past two seasons (2008, 2009). Following the
2008 campaign, Willey obtained NSCAA Second-Team All-Far West
Region honors. He finishes his career as the program’s career
record holder in games started (88).
Serving as a vocal leader in the midfield, Rodriguez helped the
Bulldogs field a potent offense. This team captain posted one goal
and four assists for a total of six points on the season. Against
Caltech on Sept. 23, he scored in the third minute before assisting
on the team’s sixth score of the match in the 80th minute. He
received First-Team All-SCIAC honors this season as well and also
picked up Second-Team All-SCIAC accolades in 2008. This marks
Rodriguez’s inaugural All-Region nod.
Carlson enjoyed a breakout season for the Maroon and Gray, earning
a starting role after aiding the team in reserve duty last year. He
led the team in scoring with 10 goals and also produced three
assists for a team-high 23 points. Carlson recorded the
Bulldogs’ top game-winning-goal total (3), notching the
difference-maker against Caltech on two occasions and
against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Oct. 21. He snared
First-Team All-SCIAC honors as well earlier this season. This marks
Carlson’s first-ever All-Region selection.
Redlands (10-7-4, 8-3-3 SCIAC) finished the season ranked third in
the SCIAC and reached the SCIAC Postseason Tournament final.
