Members of the University of Redlands men's tennis team participated in the United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Small College Regional Fall Championships in Claremont on Friday, Saturday and Sunday of last week. The Bulldogs competed as individuals, gaining excellent experience against regional opponents.
In singles, graduate student Jeff Hammond (Mercer Island, WA) and sophomore Anish Nanda (Cerritos, CA) advanced the furthest for Redlands, earning spots in the Round of 16 of the main draw.
Hammond defeated Bryce Bettwy of UC Santa Cruz in the first round, 6-4, 6-3, before taking down Sam Wong of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges by scores of 6-1, 6-1. Unfortunately, he lost a heartbreaker in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, to top-seeded Bryan Pybas of UCSC to make an exit from the singles bracket.
Nanda rallied for back-to-back, three-set victories in his opening rounds, defeating Frank Lui of CMS (6-4, 4-6, 6-4) and Donald James of UCSC (5-7, 7-5, 6-3). His run ended there as he came up short against Ray Worley of Cal Lutheran by scores of 6-1, 6-2.

Freshman Ted Burchett (Gold River, CA) and sophomore John Brewer (Portland, OR) highlighted the team's success in the consolation singles bracket, moving all the way to the quarterfinals. After suffering a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Andrew Giuffrida of Cal Lutheran in the main draw, Burchett bounced back with strong performances against Andre Herd of Chapman University (6-2, 6-7, 10-7) and Alden Williford of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (6-3, 6-2). He faced a tough opponent in Jonathan Pollare in the quarterfinals, falling 6-3, 6-2.
In the second-round consolation bracket, Bloom and Jacobson battled it out in the quarterfinals, with Bloom prevailing by a score of 6-2, 6-0.
Redlands produced strong results in the doubles competition as well, with the duo of Hammond and Wong and the team of Nanda and senior Cameron Spearman (Laguna Niguel, CA) both advancing to the semifinals.
Hammond and Wong opened the tournament with an 8-6 victory over Alex Groth and Chris Weichert of Pomona-Pitzer, before handling Mac Cahill and Zhenya Pereverzin from CMS in an 8-4 victory. Their success continued with an 8-6 win over the top-seeded duo from Cal Lutheran, Nick Ballou and Giuffrida. However, Hammond and Wong finally came up short against Robbie Erani and Ronald Wu from CMS, falling 8-4 in the semifinals.
Nanda and Spearman defeated Herd and Chris Williams of Chapman by a tight score of 8-6, before unleashing an 8-4 outcome against Bettwy and Michael Saria of UCSC in the Round of 16. They also prevailed over Russell Brockett and Brandon Wei of CMS by a score of 8-4, before losing 8-2 to the eventual champions, Parker Larsen and Pybas of UCSC.
In the consolation doubles bracket, the newly formed duo of senior Leif Durley (Fresno, CA) and Fashouer garnered a semifinal appearance with wins over Hard and Chris Williams (8-4), and Drew Cohn and Williford of P-P (8-6). They finally surrendered with a tough 9-8(2) loss to Phil Aielion-Moss and Ernie Hayhurst of CMS.
