No. 15 Bulldog Men’s Tennis Captures 6-3 Win over Washington & Lee
The No. 15 University of Redlands men's tennis team opened a busy week of non-conference competition with a 6-3 victory over the visiting Generals of Washington & Lee University (VA). After recording a 2-1 lead through the doubles, the Bulldogs won four of the six singles matches, two of which went the distance in three sets, to secure their fourth triumph of the season.
In doubles competition, Redlands faced an early deficit after dropping the match at No. 3.
However, the squad rallied back to take the lead with an 8-5 performance at the top slot and a 9-7 showing at the No. 2 spot. The tandem of freshman Patrick Lipscomb (Irvine, CA) and senior Mark Bloom (San Juan Capistrano, CA) and the duo of freshman Nick Cummins (Rancho Mirage, CA) and junior Connor Hyde (Peterborough, NH) put the squad back in front with their solid results.
During singles, the Bulldogs surged out to a 4-1 lead with juniors Anish Nanda (Cerritos, CA) and Darren Dahl (Westlake Village, CA) making quick work of their opponents at No. 6 and No. 5, respectively. Nanda recorded an impressive 6-0, 6-1 victory before Dahl closed out his foe by scores of 6-1, 6-3.
But the Generals refused to go away, responding with two consecutive triumphs at No. 3 and No. 4.
With the score in their favor at 4-3, the Bulldogs gained huge three-setters from a pair of freshmen. Cummins clinched the win for Redlands with his 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 performance at the No. 2 slot, while Lipscomb stepped up with his 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(1) showing at No. 1.
Redlands (4-1) continues its full slate of competition on Friday with a 2 p.m. showdown against No. 26 Bates College (ME) on Verdieck Courts.
