The University of Redlands men’s water polo team broke
into the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Varsity Top 20
for the first time this season and also took back its No. 1 spot in
the Division III Poll, as announced today by the CWPA.
The Bulldogs tied Johns Hopkins University (MD) for the No. 20 spot
in the Varsity Top 20, which ended the team’s season-long
absence from the national poll. Redlands finished the 2008 campaign
ranked at No. 19 and received votes in the preseason balloting
earlier this year.
In addition, the Maroon and Gray swapped places with Whittier
College for first in the Division III poll. The Bulldogs earned the
No. 1 ranking on Oct. 21, but the Poets obtained the honor the
following week and had held the top spot since then.
The Varsity Top 20 includes programs from all divisions of the NCAA
as well as those from the NAIA. The Division III Poll includes
programs from NCAA Division III institutions.
Redlands (17-16, 9-1 SCIAC) captured its eighth Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) title in program
history with a 9-1 record in conference play, which included a
first-place finish at the SCIAC Championship Tournament last
weekend.
The Bulldogs earned one of the SCIAC’s two automatic bids
into the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championships and
own the tournament’s No. 6 seed. They take on third-seeded UC
San Diego in the event’s first round on Friday at 11:45 a.m.
This year’s WWPA Championships will take place at the Zee
Allred Aquatics Center on Chapman University’s campus in
Orange.
