Redlands Men’s Water Polo Earns Five WWPA All-Academic Selections
The Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) announced earlier today that five members of the University of Redlands men's water polo team earned All-Academic Team accolades for their efforts in the classroom and in the pool. Freshman goalkeeper Tyler Abbott (Alta Loma, CA), sophomore driver Patrick Roth (Cottonwood Heights, UT), junior drivers Shane Anderson (Riverside, CA) and Danny Boessenecker (Clayton, CA), and sophomore center Matt Zaggy (University City, MO) proudly represented the Bulldogs.
In order to qualify as a member of the WWPA All-Academic Team, student-athletes must own a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher and compete in at least half of the team's contests during the fall season.
After previously receiving Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Academic awards, both Abbott and Roth continue to bring in the hardware for their academic and athletic successes in 2010-11.
In his second season with the Bulldogs, Roth headlines the group with a 3.904 cumulative GPA as a Biology major. He also tallied seven goals and 13 assists to go along with 18 ejections drawn and 10 steals.
Abbott owns a cumulative GPA of 3.275 and gained solid experience as a back-up goalkeeper for the Maroon and Gray, recording 68 saves while also contributing four assists and six steals.
Joining the team from Riverside Community College, Anderson posted a 3.014 cumulative GPA as a Biology major in his first year at the U of R. The junior also netted 10 goals, five assists, 16 steals and eight ejections drawn.
Also a transfer student-athlete, Boessenecker registered 11 goals, eight assists, and nine steals while recording a 3.238 cumulative GPA as a Business Administration major.
Zaggy finished up his second year at Redlands with a 3.023 cumulative GPA as a Business major. He tallied five goals, five assists, six steals and two ejections drawn.
