Quartet of Bulldog Men’s Water Polo Student-Athletes Earn ACWPC All-American Accolades

Four University of Redlands men’s water polo student-athletes picked up Division III All-American honors from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) for their efforts during the 2008 season, according to a release today by the ACWPC.

For the second consecutive year, senior driver Andrew Becskehazy (Miami, FL) received First-Team All-American laurels. He finished out the season with the second-most goals on the team (71) while providing the squad’s highest assist total (48). In addition, he offered 42 steals, 22 ejections drawn and 12 field blocks. This All-American honor supplements his Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Player of the Year award and his All-Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) First-Team recognition.

Both sophomore defender Andrew Smith-Jones (Annapolis, MD) and junior center Brendan Meaney (Palm Desert, CA) landed on the All-American Second Team. Smith-Jones supplied a solid goal total of 68 while contributing 23 assists, 29 steals, 28 ejections drawn and 12 field blocks. He also gained a spot on the All-SCIAC First Team in addition to his All-American recognition. An offensive force all season, Meaney put away 72 scores on the year in addition to his 24 assists, 41 steals and 42 ejections drawn. His 45 field blocks served as the team’s high in the statistical category. Meaney also garnered First-Team All-SCIAC accolades and earned a spot on the All-WWPA Second Team. This All-American award marks the first for both student-athletes.

Finally, senior utility player Jim Kehrig (Danville, CA) picked up an All-American Honorable Mention. Kehrig scored 39 goals and recorded 38 assists, 31 steals, 27 ejections drawn and 17 field blocks. Following a commendable conference season, he nabbed Second-Team All-SCIAC honors.

The Redlands men’s water polo team notched a program record in wins with 29 on the season en route to a second-place finish in the SCIAC and a fifth-place showing at the WWPA Championships. At the season’s end, the team finished up at No. 19 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Varsity Top 20.
