Junior Pitcher Kayla Uphold Tabbed SCIAC Female Athlete of the Week
It was announced on Wednesday that University of Redlands junior pitcher Kayla Uphold (Fontana, CA) was named the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Female Athlete of the Week after her stellar showing during the Bulldogs' last two doubleheaders. In addition, Redlands swept the awards for the week, as freshman golfer Perry Johnson (Lake Forest, IL) collected the SCIAC Male Athlete of the Week honor.
Uphold headlined the weekend for the 11th-ranked Bulldogs' softball team's doubleheader sweeps of the University of La Verne and Webster University (MO) as she supplied a perfect game from the mound as well as a 9-for-10 performance at the plate.
In Sunday's opening game against Webster, she threw a perfect game in five innings en route to the Bulldogs' 9-0 victory. Defensively, she helped her own cause as she was flawless with six assists. Uphold also had a stellar day against the Leopards of La Verne on Saturday as she scattered three hits and struck out two in five innings of work as the Bulldogs rolled to a 13-3 win.
Not only was she impressive on the mound but Uphold was fantastic with the bat in her hands as well. In the four games played last weekend, she supplied a batting average of .900 and a perfect slugging percentage while scoring four runs and knocking in four RBI.
Her season batting average now sits at .519, ranking her fourth in the nation in that category.
Uphold and the Bulldogs look to continue their success this Saturday when they host Whittier College at the Softball "Field of Dreams" for a 12 noon doubleheader.
The sports information directors for each SCIAC school nominate and vote for the athletes of the week.
