Redlands Swimming & Diving Blasts Beavers
The University of Redlands swimming & diving teams lambasted
Caltech on Saturday in Pasadena with the women winning, 188-42, and
the men coming out on top by a 172-58 score.
The Bulldogs swept every event with the exception of the
men’s diving events, the women’s 1000 freestyle
and the women’s 100 breaststroke.
On the women’s side, Redlands’ quality depth proved too
much for the host team as the women came out swinging in the 200
medley relay and never looked back.
Sophomore Michelle Camburn (Sunnyvale, CA) swam a different set of
events on Saturday and experienced similar results to those in her
specialty events. Camburn captured a decisive triumph in the 200
individual medley with a 2:21.32 mark before tapping in at 1:14.85
to win the 100 breaststroke.
On the boards, senior Jenna Lyons (Whittier, CA) reigned supreme.
Lyons took the top spot in the 3-meter (183.90) before taking first
in the 1-meter (184.50) later on in the meet.
In the second individual event of the meet, sophomore Kat McIntosh
(Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) fired off a 2:03.79 200 freestyle, which
earned her a first-place finish.
Using her sprint talents, freshman Casey Sripramong (Glendale, CA)
won the 50 freestyle by almost a full second, checking in at
25.88.
Redlands continued its winning ways in the 100 butterfly as
freshman Sarah Soriano (Fullerton, CA) captured first with a
1:07.79 time.
The other sprint freestyle event, the 100 freestyle, featured a
different face scoring first-place points for the Maroon and Gray
as freshman K.C. Hughes (Gig Harbor, WA) covered the four-lap
sprint in 58.53.
Dabbling with a different slate, freshman Whitney Marsh (Folsom,
CA) still came out victorious, finishing the 100 backstroke in
1:08.00 for first.
Rounding out the individual event winners was freshman Joy Corona
(Lake Bluff, IL), who won her first collegiate event by means of
the 500 freestyle (5:39.44).
Keeping with the trend of dominance, the Bulldogs took first in
both relays. Marsh, freshman Jenny Bates (Littleton, CO), McIntosh
and freshman Jaime Nippert (Gresham, OR) put together their stroke
specialties to combine for a 2:02.58 win in the 200 medley relay
while the quartet of Hughes, Soriano, McIntosh and senior Carey
Best (La Quinta, CA) registered the gold standard in the 200
freestyle relay (1:50.82).
Taking home second-place finishes for the Maroon and Gray were
freshman Jen Hoiland (San Clemente, CA) in the 200 freestyle
(2:09.03), Marsh in the 50 freestyle (26.84), junior Kelly Goeres
(Tigard, OR) in the 200 individual medley (2:29.08), senior Cassie
Pardee (Sierra Vista, AZ) in the 100 butterfly (1:09.51), Bates in
the 100 freestyle (59.53), junior Katie Heer (Scottsdale, AZ) in
the 100 backstroke (1:10.33) and Nippert in the 500 freestyle
(5:50.65).
Powered by young talent, the Redlands men dominated Caltech in
every swimming event.
Sophomore Miran Terzic (Mostar, Bosna i Hercegovina) turned heads
with a blazing-fast 52.84 100 butterfly, finishing first by more
than five-and-a-half seconds. Earlier in the meet, he bested his
teammate and fellow sprint wunderkind freshman Tyler Harp (San
Bernardino, CA) in the 200 freestyle with a winning time of
1:53.99.
No stranger to taking first, sophomore Alec Alders (Los Angeles,
CA) made a statement in two events he normally leaves for practice
sets rather than meets. Alders blitzed the field in the 200
individual medley, corralling first with a 2:04.43. In the 100
backstroke, he edged senior Buddy Olds (Murrieta, CA) by less than
a second with a 58.26 performance.
In the meet’s first individual event, freshman Greg Heinicke
(East Wenatchee, WA) went above his normal freestyle distance and
churned out a competitive 10:53.11 time for the top place in the
1000 freestyle.
Despite falling just short of cracking the 23-second barrier in the
50 freestyle with a 23.13, freshman Ben Ballard (Riverside, CA)
trumped his teammates for the first-place honor.
Harp experienced no hurdles in his 100 freestyle victory as he
cruised his way to a 49.94 outing.
Freshman Will Houser (Woodinville, WA) took on the 500 freestyle
and fared well, holding off a late charge by freshman Steven Zarian
(Superior, CO) for the 5:05.22 win.
Finally, freshman Mike Grant (Weston, MA) pulled out a 1:05.80 100
breaststroke, which earned him the top spot in the event.
Similar to the women, the men had no problem sweeping both relays.
The 200 medley relay contingent of junior Ian Starkie (Arroyo
Grande, CA), Grant, Houser and Zarian clocked the first-place
standard of 1:43.89 while junior Alex Smith-Jones (Boston, MA),
junior Clint Stevenson (South Jordan, UT), freshman Mike Camp
(Palos Verdes Estates, CA) and junior Taylor Swyers (St. Louis, MO)
teamed up in the 200 freestyle relay and won with a 1:36.75
mark.
Second-place finishers included Swyers in the 1000 freestyle
(11:45.73), Harp in the 200 freestyle (1:55.71), Stevenson in the
50 freestyle (23.32) and 100 freestyle (51.29), sophomore Andrew
Smith-Jones (Annapolis, MD) in the 200 individual medley (2:11.40),
sophomore Tim Sanders (Pasadena, CA) in the 1-meter (204.20) and
the 3-meter (174.45), Starkie in the 100 butterfly (58.24), Olds in
the 100 backstroke (58.95), Zarian in the 500 freestyle (5:08.14)
and senior Matt Soriano (Fullerton, CA) in the 100 breaststroke
(1:10.02).
