Three Bulldog Divers Qualify for SCIAC Championship Finals

Senior Jenna Lyons (Whittier, CA), junior Matt Adams (Vista, CA) and sophomore Tim Sanders (Pasadena, CA) will represent the University of Redlands at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships next weekend based on their top-eight finishes at the SCIAC Diving Prelims in El Monte on Saturday and Sunday.

Lyons offered two top-four finishes, putting herself in good position to contribute heavily at the conference championship meet. The senior standout started the weekend off with a third-place finish in the 3-meter, racking up a score of 292.10. She then edged Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges’ Lauren Yaske for fourth in the 1-meter on Sunday, scoring a 285.85.

In the men’s competition, both Adams and Sanders earned the opportunity to dive for the Maroon and Gray at the SCIAC Championships. Sanders took fifth in the 1-meter on Saturday with a 357.45 score while Adams followed closely behind, placing sixth (356.45). The two switched places on Sunday in the 3-meter as Adams snagged a sixth-place finish with a 317.65 score and Sanders came in seventh (272.15).

Two additional Bulldog male divers scored points outside of the top eight. Freshman Jeff Parsons (Newark, CA) garnered a 14th-place finish with a 97.15 score in the 1-meter while freshman Ben Ballard (Riverside, CA) scored a 129.40 in the 3-meter and took 12th overall.

The top eight divers in each event move on to the SCIAC Championships and will start out the meet with zero points. Those who placed ninth through 16th at the SCIAC Diving Prelims scored points based on their performance at the meet but will not move on to compete in the diving events at the SCIAC Championship meet.

Both swimming & diving teams travel to the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach on Thursday for the SCIAC Championships. The meet is scheduled to run from Thursday to Saturday with preliminary heats starting at 11 a.m. and final heats starting at 6 p.m. each day. Those who place in the top 16 in their preliminary swims will earn the opportunity to swim at night.
