Redlands' 700 Miles to Haiti Fundraiser Nets More than $11,000
The University of Redlands community’s “700 Miles to
Haiti” fundraiser has raised more than $11,000 for the
International Committee of the Red Cross and Doctors Without
Borders, as announced by Director of Athletics Jeff Martinez and
Director of Community Service Learning Tony Mueller.
Sponsored in part by the Redlands swimming & diving program,
the event spanned from Jan. 25 through Feb. 5 and called upon the
university community to swim 700 miles at the Thompson Aquatic
Center.
The amount brought in far surpasses the original goal of $5,000. As
of Saturday morning, the campus community had logged more than
1,400 miles and raised $11,075.58. The total amount raised
continues to grow, according to Martinez. In an interview with
The Sun, Men’s and Women’s Swimming &
Diving Head Coach Leslie Whittemore estimated the final tally to
fall somewhere around $15,000.
The Office of Community Service Learning and the swimming &
diving teams combined efforts after a devastating earthquake struck
Haiti on Jan. 12. They decided upon the swim-a-thon fundraiser
based on the distance from the Florida coast to Haiti.
