Nakamura, Depew Lead Bulldog Swimmers at Redlands Pentathlon

Sophomore McKenzie Nakamura (Kenmore, WA) ranked second overall on the women’s side while freshman Chris Depew (Naperville, IL) took first overall in the men’s meet as the University of Redlands swimming & diving teams boasted strong performances at the Redlands Pentathlon on Saturday morning in Redlands.

Swimmers competed in a 100 of each stroke followed by a 100 individual medley at the end. Overall places were determined by the sum of the times swum in each discipline.

Leading the Bulldog women, Nakamura clocked a total time of 5:21.48, which included a 1:03.55 100 butterfly, a 1:07.21 100 backstroke, a 1:09.25 100 breaststroke, a 58.44 100 freestyle and a 1:03.03 100 individual medley. April Smith of Biola University held the fastest cumulative time with a 5:17.22.

In addition, junior Michelle Camburn (Sunnyvale, CA) placed 12th (5:32.92), freshman Jessica Medvec (Tualatin, OR) took 17th (5:36.06), senior Kelly Goeres (Tigard, OR) finished 22nd (5:37.44), freshman Allie Bollella (Palo Alto, CA) came in 26th (5:41.01) and freshman Kara Parker (Houston, TX) registered the 29th-fastest time (5:41.01).

Using an event-best 100 individual medley, Depew captured the men’s crown by a slim margin. He bested Pomona-Pitzer’s Max Scholten by .17, managing an overall time of 4:37.65. Depew’s breakdown included a 53.38 100 butterfly, a 56.53 100 backstroke, a 1:03.33 100 breaststroke, a 49.35 100 freestyle and a 55.06 100 individual medley.

Also placing among the top 10 on the men’s side were sophomore Tyler Harp (San Bernardino, CA) and junior Alec Alders (Los Angeles, CA). Harp ranked seventh overall (4:46.25) while Alders settled for eighth (4:48.97).

Additionally, sophomore Will Houser (Woodinville, WA) finished 20th (4:59.82), senior Scott Tsukamoto (Dana Point, CA) took 22nd (5:00.81) and junior Sonny Morin (Seattle, WA) captured 26th (5:03.27).

No team scoring was tabulated.

Redlands’ (0-1; 0-1) divers return to action on Saturday, Nov. 21 for the Bulldog Dive Invite. The meet is scheduled to commence at 10 a.m. at the Thompson Aquatic Center in Redlands. The swimmers take a few weeks off from competition before hosting the University of La Verne on Dec. 4 at 2 p.m.
