Bulldog Swimming & Diving Teams Double up La Verne

The University of Redlands women’s and men’s swimming & diving teams handled the University of La Verne with ease, winning by respective scores of 186-41 and 183-57 in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) dual-meet action on Friday afternoon in Redlands.

The two teams combined to win 24 of the meet’s 26 offered events.

Freshman Lauren Craig (Newcastle, CA) boasted two individual event victories. She clocked a first-place 2:19.87 in the 200 individual medley before adding a 1:02.96 100 butterfly after the break.

In the sprints, freshman Allie Bollella (Palo Alto, CA) reigned supreme, touching the wall first in both the 50 freestyle (25.49) and the 100 freestyle (56.20).

Senior Melanie Loo (Waipahu, HI) stormed through the 1000 freestyle, covering the 40-lap event in a first-place time of 11:39.42.

From start to finish, freshman Kara Parker (Houston, TX) set the pace in the 200 freestyle, taking first in 2:08.37.

Freshman Jessie Chansler (Kirkland, WA) built an early lead in the 100 backstroke and pulled away, winning with a time of 1:02.91.

Junior Kayla Desai (Lakewood, CO) stopped the clock first in the 500 freestyle (5:32.34) after staving off a hard-charging finish by her teammate, sophomore Joy Corona (Lake Bluff, IL).

Finally, sophomore Jenny Bates (Littleton, CO) rounded out Redlands’ individual-event winners on the women’s side, posting the top time of 1:12.80 in the 100 breaststroke.

The contingent of Chansler, Bates, freshman Lauren Zehner (Portland, OR) and sophomore Jaime Nippert (Gresham, OR) combined for first in the 200 medley relay (1:56.50) while freshman Shirin Sedaghat (Boulder, CO), Bollella, freshman Jessica Medvec (Tualatin, OR) and sophomore K.C. Hughes (Gig Harbor, WA) teamed up in the 200 freestyle relay, winning in 1:45.15.

Other strong performances came from senior Chelsea Hamilton (Parker, CO) in the 1-meter (163.70), sophomore Shelby Mann (Bainbridge Island, WA) in the 3-meter (169.30), freshman Dionna Anast (Aloha, OR) in the 1000 freestyle (11:52.86), senior Katie Heer (Scottsdale, AZ) in the 200 freestyle (2:11.15), Bates in the 50 freestyle (26.85), Chansler in the 200 individual medley (2:20.20), Nippert in the 100 freestyle (56.78), Parker in the 100 backstroke (1:06.39), Corona in the 500 freestyle (5:33.31) and Sedaghat in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.94).

Three Bulldog men corralled two individual event wins.

On the boards, senior Matt Adams (Vista, CA) produced solid performances, taking first in both the 3-meter (208.95) and the 1-meter (222.50).

Junior Miran Terzic (Mostar, Bosna i Hercegovina) made his season debut and clocked formidable standards in both the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle. He won by more than a second in the 50-yard distance (21.21) before besting the field in the latter event (47.55) as well.

In the 200 freestyle, junior Alec Alders (Los Angeles, CA) kicked it into high gear early and maintained a strong pace, slamming the wall first (1:47.38). Just two events later, Alders returned to the pool and outperformed the competition in the 200 individual medley (2:06.54).

Sophomore Greg Heinicke (East Wenatchee, WA) posted the fastest mark in the 1000 freestyle, completing the event in 10:41.03.

In the 100 butterfly, a strong first 50 enabled senior Ryan Floersch (San Jose, CA) to build a considerable lead, and he held on to win in 55.12.

Senior Ian Starkie (Arroyo Grande, CA) kept both of his 50 splits in the 100 backstroke under 30 seconds as he cruised to a 57.19 victory.

Freshman Chris Depew (Naperville, IL) flaunted his versatility in the 500 freestyle, crushing the field with a swift time of 4:47.81.

Finally, freshman Ryan Hoy (Sacramento, CA) offered up the gold standard in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.41).

The 200 medley relay quartet of Starkie, sophomore Mike Grant (Weston, MA), Depew and sophomore Tyler Harp (San Bernardino, CA) boasted a first-place time of 1:40.91 while Alders, junior Drew Fischer (Highland, CA), freshman Matt Zaggy (University City, MO) and sophomore Steven Zarian (Superior, CO) joined up for an event-best 1:31.32 in the 200 freestyle relay.

Second-place showings on the men’s side came from Harp in the 200 freestyle (1:49.10), R. Floersch in the 50 freestyle (22.26), senior John Floersch (San Jose, CA) in the 100 freestyle (48.82), sophomore Ben Ballard (Riverside, CA) in the 100 backstroke (58.92), sophomore Will Houser (Woodinville, WA) in the 500 freestyle (5:11.32) and senior Scott Tsukamoto (Dana Point, CA) in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.16).

Redlands (1-1, 1-0 SCIAC; 1-1, 1-0 SCIAC) returns to the Thompson Aquatic Center tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. when it faces the Tigers of Occidental College.
