UR Swim & Dive: Men Sweep, Women Split in Opening SCIAC Action
The University of Redlands swimming and diving programs competed in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) twice this past weekend, hosting the University of La Verne on Friday and Occidental College on Saturday. The men's team took home two wins, while the women's team defeated the Leopards but stumbled against the Tigers.
Against La Verne, the women's crew put together a dominant performance by taking victories in nine out of the 13 events for a final score of 171-69. The men clinched their triumph over the Leopards with 29 top-three performances en route to the solid 167-63 decision.
Redlands native freshman Margo Macready continued her early success by leading the women's side with two individual wins. She clocked a first-place time of 56.58 in the 100 Free and then uncorked a winning time of 2:17.76 in the 200 IM. In addition, Macready swam the butterfly portion of the 400 Medley Relay, helping the Bulldogs out-touch the opponents with a time of 4:16.31.
The men took down the Leopards with ease highlighted by veteran senior Tyler Harp (San Bernardino, CA) and freshman Jeff Depew (Naperville, IL). Harp crushed the competition in the 200 Fly (2:04.76), defeating the next-closest swimmer by nearly six seconds. He also touched the wall first in the 50 Free with a 21.88 mark.
Rookie Depew opened up his conference career with wins in the 200 IM (1:59.19) and the 500 Free (5:30.04). During the longer race, he shaved off more than seven seconds from his previous-best time.
On Saturday, the men's squad cruised to its second SCIAC victory, defeating Occidental by a final score of 181-56 while collecting 12 event wins. In a hard-fought battle, the women fell to the Tigers by just 17 points in a 112-129 decision.
Nine different Bulldog men collected at least one individual win, resulting in the highest SCIAC point total for the team since January 22, 2011.
Despite the women's loss, the 200 Free Relay of seniors Jennifer Bates (Littleton, CO) and K.C. Hughes (Gig Harbor, WA), along with junior Jessica Medvec (Tualatin, OR) and freshman Summer Harp (San Bernardino, CA), recorded a winning time of 1:44.54.
Furthermore, senior Joy Corona (Lake Bluff, IL) and freshman Chandra Lukes (Escondido, CA) each registered individual winning times, with Corona touching first in the 1650 Free (19:16.60) and Lukes taking home the gold in the 50 Free (25.81).
In diving, the men's trio of sophomore Eli Niebuhr (Las Vegas, NV), senior Reid Coultas (Hesperia, CA) and sophomore Steven Cully (Anaheim Hills, CA) put together impressive back-to-back showings, sweeping La Verne and Oxy on both the one- and three-meter boards. Niebuhr was the featured diver of the group, winning all four events.
Senior Shelby Mann (Bainbridge Island, WA) headlined the women divers, grabbing first place in the one-meter event against the Leopards and taking second in every other competition. Along with Mann, the Bulldogs tallied a 1-2-3 sweep over ULV in the one-meter with freshman DrewAnn Andrews (Pasadena, CA) and senior Andrea Bo (Mountain View, CA) following in respective order.
Redlands heads to the 2011 Finis Invitational at the South Gate Swim Stadium on Dec. 9-10.
