U of R Swimming & Diving Cruises past Cal Lutheran in SCIAC Showdown

The University of Redlands men's and women's swimming & diving programs each clinched a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) victory by taking down Cal Lutheran University on Saturday. The women's team defeated the Regals by a final score of 147-95 and the men recorded a 140-101 win over the Kingsmen.

While notching more than 140 points for the third consecutive SCIAC meet, the women's team posted seven victories and 22 top-three performances.

Leading the way for the Maroon and Gray, the trio of freshman Chandra Lukes (Escondido, CA), junior Shirin Sedaghat (Boulder, CO) and senior Jaime Nippert (Gresham, OR) recorded a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 Free with respective times of 55.58, 56.37 and 56.43.   

In addition, Lukes picked up a win in the 50 Free, clocking in a season-low mark of 22.40.

En route to winning her third straight SCIAC race in the 100 Breast, senior McKenzie Nakamura (Kenmore, WA) punched in a time of 1:09.24.

Rookie Margo Macready (Redlands, CA) collected 24 points during the meet, helping the 400 Free Relay to the top of the podium with a time of 3:45.61, taking the top prize in the 200 Free with a personal-record of 1:58.53, and slotting in second place in the 100 Fly (1:02.10).

Senior Jenny Bates (Littleton, CO) registered two runner-up finishes, posting a time of 2:01.37 in the 200 Free and unleashing a mark of 5:26.42 in the 500 Free, while improving upon her previous season-bests in both races.

By winning 10 of the 13 events, the men's squad remained undefeated in conference action with an impressive performance.

Headlining the crew's effort, junior Chris Depew (Naperville, IL) racked in individual wins in the 100 Fly (54.69) and 400 IM (4:21.41), as well as swimming the third leg of the first-place 400 Medley Relay (3:36.81).

Senior Tyler Harp (San Bernardino, CA) continued his impressive season, staying undefeated in SCIAC races with winning marks in the 50 Free (21.85) and 100 Free (47.15).  He also joined Depew on the first-place 400 Medley Relay.

Along with Depew, senior Collin Gladys (Yorba Linda, CA) and sophomore David Ortyn (Bainbridge Island, WA) helped the Bulldogs to sweep the 100 Fly for a total of 16 points. Depew led the effort with a time of 54.69, as Gladys and Ortyn followed within five one-hundredths of a second.

Additionally, the Bulldogs swept the 500 Free with sophomore Clint Freeman (Brentwood, CA) leading the way (5:01.59), sophomore Patrick Wall (Ladue, MO) touching in second (5:02.02) and senior Greg Heinicke (East Wenatchee, WA) collecting bronze (5:08.10).  

Redlands jumps back into the pool on Saturday when it takes to the road with an exciting conference meet against the Poets of Whittier College at 10:30 a.m.
