Redlands Swimming & Diving Wipes Out Whittier College
The University of Redlands swimming & diving programs collected victories on the road over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opponent Whittier College this past Saturday, with the women's team posting a 155-84 final mark, while the men's crew notched a 173-61 win.
While garnering 10 victories and 25 top-three finishes, the women tallied more than 140 points for the fourth consecutive conference meet.
The Bulldogs recorded significant points in the 100 Free with freshman Chandra Lukes (Escondido, CA), junior Shirin Sedaghat (Boulder, CO), and seniors Jamie Nippert (Gresham, OR) and K.C. Hughes (Gig Harbor, WA) registering a rare 1-2-3-4 sweep. Lukes set the pace with her winning time of 54.36.
Freshman Margo Macready (Redlands, CA) continued her impressive rookie campaign by taking home top honors in the 200 Free with a mark of 2:00.28 and dropped nearly 23 seconds from her career-best time in the 500 Free (5:14.43) for first place.
Veteran breaststroker senior McKenzie Nakamura (Kenmore, WA) clocked in a winning effort in the 100 Free (1:09.82) for the fourth straight conference meet.
Junior Caitlin Michaels (Hanover, NH) collected her second individual victory of the season in the 100 Back, touching the wall in 1:03.82. Additionally, Michaels swam the first leg of the winning 200 Medley Relay that finished with a season-low time of 1:57.12. Her efforts were complemented by Nakamura, junior Lauren Zehner (Portland, OR) and Sedaghat.
In addition, the 200 Free Relay recorded a first-place performance with a season-best time of 1:42.12. This quartet included senior Jenny Bates (Littleton, CO), junior Jessica Medvec (Tualatin, OR), Macready, and Lukes.
The divers rallied together to grab 27 total points, highlighted by a sweep of the three-meter event. Senior Shelby Mann (Bainbridge Island, WA) led the way, earning first in the three-meter with 171.60 points and second in the one-meter at 161.95 points. Senior Andrea Bo (Mountain View, CA) and freshman DrewAnn Andrews (Pasadena, CA) combined forces for the high-dive sweep, notching 165.27 and 160.90 points, respectively.
On the men's side, the crew won all but one event while earning 23 top-three performances and scored more than 170 points for the fourth time in 2011-12.
Headlining the team's efforts, sophomore Clint Freeman (Brentwood, CA) registered season-low times in the 100 Free (47.66) and 200 Free (1:46.55), with both performances resetting the pool records at Whittier's new facility. He also swam the final leg of the first-place 200 Free Relay (1:28.93), which included junior Chris Depew (Naperville, IL), sophomore Quinn Curl (San Mateo, CA) and senior Ben Ballard (Riverside, CA).
The Maroon and Gray swept the top-three spots in the 100 Back and 400 Individual Medley, with freshman Jeff Depew (Naperville, IL) shining as the winner in each race. He clocked in at 4:09.56 in the longer competition before uncorking a time of 53.35 in the sprint.
Senior David Sekula (LaGrange, IL) rattled off a win during conference competition for the fourth straight week, slotting in at No. 1 in the 1000 Free with a time of 10:14.63.
In addition, senior Mike Grant (Weston, MA) picked up his second victory of the season in the 100 Breast, posting a time of 1:00.93.
Rookie Eric Loprete (Beaverton, OR) also landed on the winners' podium, swimming a career-best time of 55.58 in the 100 Fly.
Senior Reid Coultas (Hesperia, CA) highlighted the men's diving competition, taking first place on the three-meter board with a score of 177.15 and second place in the one-meter with 148.25 points.
Redlands faces off with conference rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in its next competition on Saturday, Feb. 4, at 10 a.m. in Claremont.
