Redlands Swimmers Excel as Harp Wins 200 Free National Title and 400 Medley Relay Finishes Second
Senior standout Tyler Harp (San Bernardino, CA) captured his inaugural national title and the second for the University of Redlands this season, with a stellar performance in the 200 Free during Thursday's competition at the Indiana University Natatorium. In an incredibly close race, he moved up from third place after the second turn to finish in a tie for first with Colorado College's Jordan DeGayner, as the duo touched the wall together in 1:37.51.
The Bulldogs' success continued with the 400 Medley Relay of freshman Jeff Depew (Naperville, IL), junior Chris Depew (Naperville, IL), senior Collin Gladys (Yorba Linda, CA) and Harp combining for the fastest time in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) history to take second place at the national meet. Harp uncorked an impressive final leg of the race to propel the quartet to a time of 3:17.39.
Earlier in the day, C. Depew put together a fourth-place showing in the consolation final of the 400 Individual Medley with a mark of 3:58.87. In addition, Gladys touched the wall in 49.84 to finish seventh in the 100 Fly consolation final.
With today's results, the Bulldogs now sit fifth in the overall team standings.
