Bulldog Women’s Basketball Dominates Caltech, Takes over Top Spot in SCIAC
With solid shooting and stifling defense, the University of Redlands women's basketball team rolled to a 76-34 victory over Caltech on Saturday to remain perfect in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action. With Occidental College's loss to Cal Lutheran University, the Bulldogs now sit alone at the top of the conference standings.
Against the Beavers, Redlands led from the opening basket as junior guard Ashley Sevilla (San Diego, CA) drained a three-pointer less than 30 seconds into the game. She went on to score a career-high 23 points on 6-for-9 shooting from beyond the arc.
The Beavers scored a bucket to make it a one-point game but then endured a seven-minute scoring drought, easily allowing the Maroon and Gray to surge ahead by 16 points. With 11:55 remaining in the first frame, sophomore forward Victoria Fakalata (East Palo Alto, CA) capped off this Bulldog run with a layup.
By the end of the half, Redlands had the game well in hand with a 36-10 lead.
Freshman forward Nicole Packard (Thousand Oaks, CA) took advantage of her 24 minutes with a career-high 15 points.
Overall, the Bulldogs utilized 10 different players with each scoring at least two points. The team shot 49.2% for the game, which included nine three-pointers. In addition, the Maroon and Gray scored 33 points off of 31 Beaver turnovers.
Redlands (12-5, 6-0 SCIAC) heads to Occidental on Thursday for an important SCIAC showdown with the once-beaten Tigers at 7:30 p.m.
