Bulldog Women's Lacrosse Dominates Pomona-Pitzer, Celebrates Senior Night

The University of Redlands women’s lacrosse team provided an impressive send-off for its senior class as the Bulldogs routed the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges by a score of 21-11 in their final home game of the regular season.

Prior to the start of the game, the team honored seniors Lauren Matta (Holyoke, MA), Liza Gray (Centennial, C O), Amy Gulbranson (Bainbridge Island, WA), Ali Chope (San Francisco, CA), Julia Chope (San Francisco, CA) and Lisa O’Kane (San Diego, CA).

The Sagehens scored first with a goal by Martha Marich just 30 seconds into the game. However, this was the only lead that Pomona-Pitzer would enjoy as Redlands rattled off 10 unanswered goals within the next 11 minutes. During this span, junior attack player Mary Shepherd (Dallas, TX) unleashed her offensive prowess with five of the team’s goals, while sophomore midfielder Christy Smith (St. Louis Park, MN) provided three.

The Sagehens scored twice to cut the lead to seven at 3-10, but the Bulldogs took control again with four more goals to finish out the first half.

With a 14-3 advantage, Redlands quickly gained two more goals with freshman Blair Callaghan (Tacoma, WA) and Smith finding the back of the net. However, Pomona-Pitzer fought back with three consecutive goals followed by four more straight scores to move within seven with 7:47 remaining. Nonetheless, the Bulldogs responded as Smith netted back-to-back goals and Matta put her second one away to close out the game.

The Sagehens’ Marich led the game with seven goals.

For Redlands, Smith came up with six goals, one assist, three ground balls and five draw controls. Shepherd scored five goals, while junior midfielder Haley Kern (Portland, OR) contributed a hat trick. Matta added two scores along with eight draw controls. Gray added two goals with O’Kane, Callaghan and freshman attack player Kali Wilgus (Portland, OR) scoring one each. Sophomore goalkeeper Katrina Hostak (Maple Valley, WA) made 11 stops between the pipes.

The Bulldogs (6-4) head to Massachusetts for two games, facing Williams College on April 22 and MIT on the 23rd. They return to California on April 27 for an away game against regional rival Whittier College at 7 p.m.
