Bulldogs Host 2011 Women’s Lacrosse Tournament on Saturday and Sunday
The University of Redlands women's lacrosse program looks forward to hosting the 2011 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championship Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. The Bulldogs enjoy this privilege as a result of a predetermined rotation of hosts for this event, which is in its second year of existence.
The competition kicks off with a first-round showdown between No. 4 Occidental College and No. 5 Whittier College on Wednesday evening in Eagle Rock. Featuring two teams tied at 2-6 in conference competition, this game determines the fourth squad to participate in this weekend's semifinal matches at Redlands.
On Saturday, the top-seeded Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges face the winner of the aforementioned game in an 11:30 a.m. bout at Farquhar Field. Boasting a national ranking of No. 18, CMS enters the tournament after running the table in two rounds of dual competition.
Redlands shores up the No. 2 seed with a 5-3 conference record. In Saturday's 2:30 p.m. match, the Bulldogs take on No. 3 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, which completed round-robin action with a 3-5 mark.
Saturday's winners advance to the championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
After gaining one point for each regular-season victory, the teams now have the opportunity to earn additional points for each successful round of the tournament. The winner of the event gains as many as 10 points, making this an exciting finish to the second season of SCIAC women's lacrosse.
Admission to the tournament follows the conference ticket policy, allowing all SCIAC students and employees to attend for free, while all others over the age of 12 are $5.00.
Bulldog Athletics reminds the public that dogs and other pets are not permitted at Farquhar Field.
Updates will be posted at the tournament web site at http://www.goredlands.com/sports/wlax/2010-11/files/SCIAC_Tourney.
