Suzette Soboti Reaches Coaching Milestone as Bulldogs Blast Puget Sound
While never trailing in Wednesday's non-conference tilt, the University of Redlands women's lacrosse team blew open a 9-7 lead at halftime to capture Head Coach Suzette Soboti's 100th varsity win at the helm of the Bulldogs. The well-rounded offense, which included 11 different goal-scorers, combined efforts with a relentless defense to reach the memorable milestone for Soboti in a 20-10 victory over the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington.
Sophomore midfielder Jacky Craycraft (Trabuco Canyon, CA) fired off the Maroon and Gray's first netter less than seven minutes into the game. She went on to lead her team with four goals and one assist.
After trading scores, the Loggers eventually tied it up at five all with back-to-back goals in a span of a minute.
However, Redlands responded with three unanswered netters to take a lead it would never relinquish. Senior attack player Ashley Finke (Austin, TX), senior defender Anna Timberlake (Seattle WA), and senior attack player Blair Callaghan (Tacoma, WA) each found the back of the net during this outburst.
Up 9-7 at the break, the Bulldogs erupted for 11 goals in the second period while holding UPS to only three. The Maroon and Gray's offensive onslaught came in spurts, highlighted by a four-goal explosion early in the stanza to put Redlands up by six. Junior attack player Aimee Dewan (Alamo, CA) recorded two of these scores in a 20-second span.
In addition to her offensive contributions, Craycraft posted a game-high five draw controls for the Bulldogs. Senior defender Rachel Haag (Newtown, PA) recorded four ground balls, while senior goalkeeper Ana Martinez (Pleasanton, CA) made five saves in a complete-game win.
Soboti has served as the head coach of the Redlands women's lacrosse program since its inception in 1999, when it played a mixed schedule of varsity and club teams. Overall, she has 115 wins but tonight's performance marks her 100th varsity victory, just five games after the program's inaugural NCAA tournament appearance.
The Bulldogs (5-0) continue their Northwest road trip with Friday's match against Pacific University in Forest Grove, OR. The first draw is set for 6 p.m.
