Redlands Women's Lacrosse Stumbles to Fredonia State in Non-Conference Bout
The University of Redlands women's lacrosse team faced off against Fredonia State University (NY) in Friday's non-conference showdown on Farquhar Field, but a slow start plagued the Bulldogs as they fell to the Blue Devils by a score of 6-14.
Fredonia's defense held the Maroon and Gray scoreless through the first 15 minutes of the game. Junior midfielder Jacky Craycraft (Trabuco Canyon, CA) ended the Bulldogs' drought at the 14:14-mark with her first of five goals for the night.
However, the Blue Devils' Marissa Cussins rattled off four goals in the opening frame, propelling her team to a 7-1 lead at the halftime break.
After Fredonia scored four more goals to start the second half, the Bulldogs fired off back-to-back netters to create a slight shift in momentum. Junior defender Emma Pierce (Portland, OR) made a big defensive play to force an opponent turnover, with junior midfielder Allison Leipzig (Newton, MA) picking up the ball for the Maroon and Gray. Following a successful clear, Craycraft found space and went straight to goal with 14:56 left in the period.
Redlands' consecutive score came just about a minute later, when junior midfielder KK McCaslin (Portland, OR) converted a free-position shot to make it 3-11.
The teams combined for six goals in the final 10 minutes of action, with Craycraft unleashing three for the Bulldogs. But it was not enough to make up the deficit.
Beyond her goals, Craycraft added four ground balls and three draw controls. Leipzig offered four ground balls and McCaslin snagged four draw controls. Graduate student goalkeeper Ana Martinez (Pleasanton, CA) recorded eight saves while patrolling the Redlands cage.
Fredonia's (4-0) Cussins finished with five goals and two assists to go along with five draw controls and four ground balls. Casey Chiesa made eight saves in a complete-game effort.
Redlands (7-4) faces Colorado College on Friday, March 29, at 7:30 p.m. on Farquhar Field.
