Big Second Half Propels U of R Women's Lacrosse to 18-9 Victory over Colorado College
The University of Redlands women's lacrosse team snapped its losing skid with a resounding 18-9 victory over the visiting Tigers of Colorado College on Friday night in non-conference action. After trailing early, the Bulldogs rallied back to turn an 11-8 halftime lead into a lopsided victory, holding the visitors to just one goal in the second stanza.
Colorado College jumped out to a 4-1 lead just 10 minutes into the contest, with Kate Krieger netting two of the Tigers' scores.
The teams traded goals before Redlands unleashed four unanswered netters to take its first lead of the game at 6-5 with 11:36 remaining in the period. During this span, senior attack player Aimee Dewan (Alamo, CA) capped off the run with back-to-back scores in just 19 seconds.
After Colorado College responded with a netter to even the score at six apiece, Redlands' junior midfielder Jacky Craycraft (Trabuco Canyon, CA) and junior midfielder KK McCaslin (Portland, OR) combined efforts to score a hat trick over the next five minutes.
Both teams closed out the half with two goals apiece, leading to the 11-8 advantage for the Bulldogs.
During the second stanza, the Maroon and Gray simply took over by scoring seven goals and allowing just one. The Bulldog defense sincerely stepped up, with graduate student goalkeeper Ana Martinez (Pleasanton, CA) leading the charge. Not only did she make impressive stops between the pipes, she caused multiple opponent turnovers with great heads-up plays. She finished with a game-high five caused turnovers, including four interceptions. Martinez also earned eight saves in the complete-game victory.
Redlands gained five goals from McCaslin, while Craycraft and freshman midfielder Stephanie Garrett (San Diego, CA) each contributed four. Junior attack player Allie Hoffler (Draper, UT) provided two of the team's five assists on the night.
As a team, the Bulldogs pulled in 18 draw controls, as Garrett and senior midfielder Crystal Painter (Lake George, NY) combined for 13 of them.
The Bulldogs (8-4, 4-1 SCIAC) travel to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Wednesday for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) showdown with the Athenas at 7 p.m. Fans may follow the action through live web-streaming.
