Bulldog Women’s Soccer Pulls off Come-from-behind Victory against Pomona-Pitzer
Senior forward Fionna Connolly (Salem, OR) once again came up clutch for the University of Redlands women's soccer team, helping the squad to pull off a 2-1 comeback win over Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) foe Pomona Pitzer on Saturday at Farquhar Field. After trailing within seconds of the start of competition, the team rallied behind one another en route to posting two netters in the final 45 minutes, including Connolly's game-winning header.
Sagehen senior Traci Lopez (Santa Fe, NM) connected on sophomore Allie Tao's (Alamo, CA) corner kick just 53 seconds into the contest for the early lead. Pomona-Pitzer dominated the remainder of the half by controlling possession and taking 12 more shots than Redlands.
After the intermission, the Bulldogs played with determination and urgency, refusing to go away quietly.
Junior forward Samantha Rivera (Thousand Oaks, CA) evened up the scored in the 54th minute when she ripped a shot from 25 yards out that slipped past the fingertips of the Sagehens' goalkeeper into the back netting. Connolly took a couple of touches from the deep right side before feeding Rivera for the Bulldogs' first goal of the game.
For the next 36 minutes the teams went back and forth before Connolly clinched the victory for the Maroon and Gray on a set piece. Freshman midfielder Devin Wright (Upland, CA) slotted a perfect corner kick to her teammate while notching her first collegiate point.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sabrina Grandke-Bawab (Kirkland, WA) registered her fourth win of the 2011 campaign, wrapping up the final 45 minutes while stopping two shots. Junior goalkeeper Linzey Smith (Anaheim Hills, CA) earned the start for the U of R and collected five saves in the first half.
The Bulldogs (7-3-1, 4-3 SCIAC) look forward to hosting their third annual "Breast Cancer Awareness Night" on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when they face off against the ninth-ranked Regals of Cal Lutheran University. In addition, the Redlands men battle it out against CLU at 4 p.m. to kick off a unique soccer doubleheader at Farquhar Field.
