Rivera's Golden Goal Lifts Redlands Women's Soccer to Victory over CMS
The University of Redlands women's soccer team earned its fourth victory of the season on Saturday afternoon, topping Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges by a score of 2-1 in double overtime. Senior forward Samantha Rivera (Thousand Oaks, CA) won it for the Bulldogs when she notched her first goal of the campaign during Saturday's 104th minute.
Redlands opened the scoring at the 17:34-mark of the first half when senior midfielder Kendall Pegan (Lafayette, CA) found the back of the net for her second goal in as many games.
Midway through the first stanza, U of R senior goalkeeper Linzey Smith (Anaheim Hills, CA) came up with a crucial save, stopping a one-on-one breakaway opportunity for the Athenas. On the game, Smith tallied two saves in 45 minutes of action.
CMS sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Augustine (Anaheim Hills, CA) scored the equalizer in the 77th minute of play.
While both teams pushed for the winning goal in the final minutes, neither was able to break through, sending the game to overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime period, the Maroon and Gray found its answer with Rivera's golden goal. Sophomore forward Sierra Duarte (Portland, OR) dribbled past a slew of CMS defenders before crossing the ball to Rivera, who one-timed it past the Athena goalkeeper for the exciting netter.
Pegan and Rivera headed up the attack for Redlands on the day, tallying four and five shots, respectively.
With the triumph, Redlands (4-1-1, 3-1-0) moves into a tie for second place in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC). The team takes on the University of La Verne at the friendly confines of Farquhar Field on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
