Redlands Women’s Tennis Defeats CMS


The University of Redlands women’s tennis team earned the top seed for this weekend’s Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Championships by taking down the Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday. With the 8-1 win, the Bulldogs remain undefeated in SCIAC and look forward to hosting the exciting tournament on Friday and Saturday.

During Saturday’s match against CMS, Redlands swept the doubles with solid play from every position. At the #1 spot, the sophomore duo of Paige Sumida (Hilo, HI) and Whitney Waters (Austin, TX) posted an 8-6 win while the #2 team of sophomore Rachael Miller (Newport Beach, CA) and freshman Sara Yoshinaga (Honolulu, HI) came out on top with an impressive score of 8-2. Finally, senior Natalie Krzmarzick ( Yucaipa, CA) and junior Kaleena Wakamatsu (Maui, HI) combined efforts at #3 to earn the 8-5 victory for the doubles sweep.

In singles action, the Bulldog revealed their depth by taking all but one match, with three of them coming in straight sets. Junior Tori Damiani (Sacramento, CA) captured the 6-2, 6-4 victory at #6 as senior Katie Bell (San Dimas, CA) cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 at #3. Waters defeated her opponent at #4 by scores of 7-5, 6-2, while Sumida came from behind to win at #2, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Rounding out the Bulldogs’ points, Miller came away with a 5-7, 6-4, 10-7 victory at the top spot.

Redlands (13-4, 7-0 SCIAC) welcomes all seven conference opponents for the SCIAC Championships on Friday at 8 a.m. The Bulldogs face #8 Caltech in the opening match.
