Three Redlands Women's Tennis Players Advance to NCAA Individual Championships
It was announced earlier today that juniors Rachael Miller
(Newport Beach, CA), Paige Sumida (Hilo, HI) and Whitney Waters
(Austin, TX) will represent the University of Redlands at the 2009
NCAA Division III Individual Women’s Tennis
Championships.
Miller and Sumida are two of 32 individuals selected to compete in
the singles tournament, while Sumida and Waters enter the doubles
competition that includes 16 duos from around the country.
Redlands is the only Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (SCIAC) school to gain two players into the singles
championships.
During the 2009 campaign, Miller has compiled a 12-14 record as the
Bulldogs’ top singles player. According to the
Campbell’s/ITA Individual Tennis Rankings, she lands at No. 7
in the West Region.
Sumida continues to bolster both lineups for Redlands, competing at
No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles with Waters. In singles, she has
earned a record of 15-7, including wins in eight of her last nine
outings. Sumida currently sits at No. 5 in the West Region.
In doubles, Sumida and Waters boast a No. 2 regional ranking, along
with a record of 15-8 as the team’s top duo. They competed at
the NCAA Individual Championships in 2007 and 2008.
The individual championships take place May 22-24 and are co-hosted
by Oglethorpe University (GA) and Gwinnett Sports Commission at
Collins Hill Athletic Club in Lawrenceville, GA.
Prior to the singles and doubles tournaments, the No. 8 Bulldog
women’s tennis team anticipates competing in the 2009 NCAA
Division III Championships, which begin on Saturday at
Pomona-Pitzer Colleges with a 10 a.m. match against No. 24 Chapman
