Waters and Sumida Win ITA Fall Regional Doubles Title

Competing in the annual Intercollegiate Tennis
Association’s (ITA) Small Colleges Fall Regional
Championships, seniors Whitney Waters (Austin, TX) and Paige Sumida
(Hilo, HI) from the University of Redlands won the women’s
main doubles draw on Sunday. The duo now looks forward to competing
at the national tournament at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center in
Mobile, AL, on October 15-18.
Waters and Sumida entered the tournament as the top seed, riding
the success of their 2009 spring season which culminated in a No. 5
national ranking to finish out the year.
Last weekend, the duo cruised by opponents in the first two rounds,
earning 8-1 victories before being tested by fifth-seeded Nicole
Holsted and Jessica Hsu from Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. The Bulldogs
prevailed by a score of 9-7 to advance to the semi-finals.
Against Amy Logan and Cassidy Sirois of Chapman University, Waters
and Sumida put up another impressive showing with their 8-2
victory, propelling them into the final round.
The Maroon and Gray team came from behind in the best of three
showing and defeated the No. 4 seed, Jamie Solomon and Kara Wang
from Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, by scores of 5-7, 6-4, 6-3.
