No. 27 Redlands Women's Tennis Conquers Cal Lutheran, 8-1
The 27th-ranked University of Redlands women's tennis team took down the visiting Regals of Cal Lutheran University on Wednesday, capturing its fourth Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) victory of the season. Equipped with a 2-1 lead after the doubles, the Bulldogs prevailed in all six singles matches to register an 8-1 decision in the make-up contest from March 17.
All three doubles matches resulted in lopsided scores, with Redlands winning at two of the slots. The No. 3 duo of freshman Maddie Morton (Henderson, NV) and sophomore Paige Press (La Jolla, CA) initiated the scoring with an 8-1 win, while the No. 2 tandem of freshmen Ceara Sumida (Hilo, HI) and Julia Pollak (Holland, PA) recorded an 8-2 victory.
Leading 2-1, Redlands needed just three singles matches to put this triumph in the books but instead gained positive outcomes at every slot.
Pollak and junior Shannon Cassidy (Yuba City, CA) quickly closed out their contests to make it official. After Pollak shut out her No. 6 opponent, Cassidy dominated her No. 5 counterpart by scores of 6-2, 6-1.
Press followed suit at No. 4 with her 6-4, 6-3 victory, before Morton came out on top in a 6-3, 6-0 display at No. 2.
Finally, Sumida and sophomore Jessica Ly (Torrance, CA) preserved the singles sweep with their solid performances at No. 2 and No.1, respectively.
Redlands (11-4, 4-0 SCIAC) battles it out with the ninth-ranked Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges on Friday at 2 p.m. in Claremont.
