No. 22 Redlands Women's Tennis Falls No. 15 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges
The No. 22 University of Redlands women's tennis team traveled to Pomona-Pitzer Colleges for an important Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match against the No. 15 Sagehens. With the score tied at three-all, the Bulldogs faltered in the remaining singles matches, leading to the 3-6 defeat.
The top doubles duo of sophomore Jessica Ly (Torrance, CA) and junior Shannon Cassidy (Yuba City, CA) impressed against the 10th-ranked tandem from Pomona-Pitzer, winning by a score of 8-1 for the early momentum.
However, the Sagehens answered with hard-fought victories at the other two doubles slots.
Entering the singles down by one, Redlands needed to win four matches before Pomona-Pitzer nabbed three.
Sophomore Paige Press (La Jolla, CA) contributed her part with a flawless 6-0, 6-0 performance at the No. 4 spot.
But the Sagehens won at No. 2, sending Redlands into another deficit at 2-3 in the overall match score.
Moments later, freshman Julia Pollak (Holland, PA) breathed new life into the Bulldogs' effort with her 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 6.
With the score knotted at three apiece, the Maroon and Gray had to win two of the three final matches.
Unfortunately, the Sagehens controlled the subsequent outcomes, taking all three in straight sets.
Redlands (12-5, 5-1 SCIAC) jumps back on the court on Monday with a 4:30 p.m. make-up match against the ninth-ranked Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in Claremont. The squads' original contest was rained out on April 13.
