Bulldog Volleyball Sweeps Occidental

The University of Redlands women’s volleyball team jumped back into the win column on Friday with a three-game sweep over the Tigers of Occidental College. This victory keeps the Bulldogs in a tie for third place with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) standings.

The team began the match with authority, earning a dominating 30-10 victory in game one. In game two, the Bulldogs struggled to remain consistent, giving up more errors, but came out on top, 30-25. Redlands then easily took the match with a solid 30-14 win in the third game.

Sophomore right-side hitter Jordann Tanner (Vista, CA) led her team with nine kills and 20 total attacks with no errors for an impressive .450 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter-turned-attacker Courtney Rood (Beaverton, OR) boasted the best game of her career with eight kills and a solid .412 hitting percentage.

The team distributed the ball by committee with three setters garnering the bulk of the assists as junior Ashley Williams (Sunland, CA) led the way with eight assists and sophomore Kelina Smith (Kurtistown, HI) and freshman Heather Anthony (Redwood City, CA) added six apiece. Defensively, freshman Chelsea Arcaris (Vista, CA) stepped up in the back row with 22 digs. Freshman middle blocker Megan Phillips (Vista, CA) provided great strength at the net with her three solo and two block assists.

Bulldog volleyball (11-10, 4-3 SCIAC) enjoys a week off from competition and then opens the second round of conference action with a road game against the University of La Verne on Tuesday, October 16, at 7:30 p.m. This match is scheduled to be web-cast via the La Verne and American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) web sites.
