Redlands Volleyball Suffers Four-game Loss to #9 La Verne
|
Amidst the excitement of the first-ever Southern California
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) web-cast, along with
the return of senior outside hitter Lori Nakamura (Honolulu, HI),
the University of Redlands volleyball team entered last
night’s match against #9 University of La Verne with high
hopes of an upset. Despite taking game two, Redlands struggled to
play with consistency while La Verne stepped up its game to hand
the Bulldogs their 11th loss of the season, 21-30, 30-23, 15-30,
16-30. In front of an excited crowd of more than 500 fans, both teams competed well in the first game, with La Verne earning the victory. However, Redlands quickly bounced back and stunned the Leopards with its 30-23 win in game two. This marked the first time that a SCIAC school had accomplished this feat during the 2007 season. Nonetheless, the loss did not faze La Verne as the Leopards rolled through the third and fourth games with ease. Redlands earned a team attack percentage of .125 and accumulated 13 ball-handling errors. During the second game, all parts of the team’s plan seemed to click as Redlands tallied an impressive hitting percentage of .357, compared to La Verne’s .200, en route to the exciting victory. But the Leopards proved more consistent throughout the match with a team hitting percentage of .282. The Bulldogs looked to freshman outside hitter Jackie Hamilton (Loma Linda, CA) to lead their efforts with 12 kills while sophomore right-side attacker Jordann Tanner (Vista, CA) provided 10. La Verne gained big performances from sophomore outside hitter Crista Jones (Fresno, CA) with 14 kills, and senior right-side hitter Jodi Lindsay (Alta Loma, CA) with 13. Defensively, freshman libero Chelsea Arcaris (Vista, CA) provided 34 digs for Redlands while the Leopards defended by committee with four players earning double-digit numbers. The Bulldogs (11-11, 4-4 SCIAC) look to rebound on Friday as they face #24 Central College (IA) and conference opponent Caltech in Pasadena at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively. |
