The University of Redlands volleyball team took on four formidable opponents at the Cal Lutheran Posada Royale Classic on Friday and Saturday in Thousand Oaks, nabbing an exciting win in five sets against Rhodes College (TN). After falling in straight sets to the University of Mary Washington (VA) in their opening match, the Bulldogs bounced back with a hard-fought victory over the Lynx by scores of 16-25, 27-25, 25-19, 18-25, 15-3.
Against Rhodes, the Maroon and Gray gained double-digit kill performances from sophomore outside Morgan Buckner (San Rafael, CA) and freshman outside/opposite hitter Jackie Starks (Long Beach, CA). Buckner racked up 12 kills on 33 attempts for a clip of .303, while Starks knocked down 15 for a hitting percentage of .316. Freshman libero Allison Padgett (Redlands, CA) solidified the Bulldog defense with her 20 digs and sophomore setter Jennifer Wacker (Longmont, CO) distributed 28 assists.
On Saturday, Redlands battled it out with Lycoming College (PA) and Widener University (PA) but suffered two incredibly tight five-set losses. The team posted some of its best numbers of the season but fell short down the stretch.
Against Lycoming, Buckner led the offense with 23 kills on 65 attacks for a hitting percentage of .323. Starks and senior outside Sam Dodson (Alamogordo, NM) each put down 19 kills, with Dodson unleashing a clip of .486. With five players in double figures on defense, Padgett led the team's well-rounded effort with a career-high 30 digs. Wacker dished out 55 assists for the most during her time at Redlands as well.
Unfortunately, the positive statistics did not result in a positive outcome, as the Bulldogs fell, 23-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-19, 18-20, which included an epic fifth set highlighted by an incredibly long rally when the score was tied at 18.
Similarly, Redlands faced another difficult loss in five sets when taking on Widener in the Bulldogs' final outing of the weekend. Once again, the team recorded a solid showing from a statistical point of view but struggled to seal the deal, resulting in a heartbreaking 25-16, 23-25, 25-16, 23-25, 13-15 defeat.
During this match, the attacking duo of Buckner and Starks continued to shine with 23 and 20 kills, respectively. Buckner tied her career-high from the previous match while recording double-digit kills for the fourth time during the tournament. Starks posted her career-high during her third consecutive performance with double figures, while uncorking an impressive hitting percentage at .526.
As a team, the Bulldogs fired off a solid attack, registering a .403 clip. Junior setter Lauren Walsh (La Verne, CA) stepped in as the team's ball-distributor, racking up 68 assist in the process, which places tied for second all-time at Redlands for a single match.
Defensively, freshman libero Courtney Johnson (Dana Point, CA) tallied 32 digs for her best display of the season and her young career. Four other teammates posted 10 or more as well.
Redlands (3-16, 2-6 SCIAC) strives to build upon its experiences from the weekend when it travels to Whittier College on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) showdown against the Poets.
