It was announced on Friday that the University of Redlands volleyball program was one of 533 teams honored with the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award. According to the AVCA's release, this is the most number of teams to receive this honor in the accolade's 20-year history.
Bulldog volleyball is one of the record-setting 90 NCAA Division III teams that maintained a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 through the end of the 2011-12 academic year. With 18 players currently on its roster, Redlands combined efforts in the classroom for an impressive mark of 3.412. The team was led academically by senior right-side hitter Alex Martin (Highlands Ranch, CO), who owned a cumulative GPA of 3.911 when she completed her degree in Business Administration earlier this May. In addition, ten of the players boast a mark of 3.5 or higher.
Among the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), Redlands is joined by Chapman University and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges as fellow recipients of this honor.
