Redlands Volleyball Impresses during CLU Posada Royale Fall Invite

The University of Redlands volleyball team competed in the Cal Lutheran University Posada Royale Fall Invitational over the weekend, equaling the program's total wins from a year ago with its 3-1 showing in Thousand Oaks. The Bulldogs swept Grinnell College (IA), Macalester College (MN) and Mills College while coming up just short in a five-set battle against George Fox University (OR).

The Maroon and Gray opened the tournament on Friday with a 25-22, 25-11, 25-19 effort against Grinnell. Freshman middle blocker Ashton Martin (Redlands, CA) led the offense with an impressive hitting percentage of .533, which came off of nine kills. Junior outside hitter Morgan Buckner (San Rafael, CA) made her 2012 debut with 17 digs and six kills.

The Bulldogs continued to shine in their second outing of the day, dismissing Macalester by scores of 25-14, 25-23, 25-15. Buckner and sophomore middle blocker Maddi Clark (Escondido, CA) joined forces for a lethal attack, notching 13 and 10 kills, respectively. Junior setter Alisha Cornick (Hollister, CA) dished out 37 assists while tying for the team-lead with 10 digs. Freshman libero Karly Burningham (Sonoma, CA) also recorded 10 digs in the match.

The team's only loss of the two-day tournament came in a defensive battle against George Fox, 25-19, 13-25, 25-18, 22-25, 6-15. Martin and Buckner maintained their offensive prowess against the Bruins, as they each knocked down 10 kills. Buckner stepped up her defense with 21 digs.

Finally, the Maroon and Gray capped off a great weekend with a solid three-set performance against Mills by scores of 25-10, 26-24, 25-11. Junior setter Jen Wacker (Longmont, CO) distributed 22 assists, finding Buckner for 12 kills.

Redlands (3-2) jumps into Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action on Friday with a home tilt against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at 7:30 p.m. in Currier Gym.
