Bulldog Volleyball Cruises past Caltech in Three-Set Sweep
The University of Redlands volleyball team returned to the win column on Tuesday night with a solid three-set sweep over the Caltech Beavers in Pasadena. Redlands utilized nearly everyone on the roster en route to the 25-13, 25-21, 25-18 triumph in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action.
The teams battled to an 11-all tie in the opening stanza before junior outside hitter Morgan Buckner (San Rafael, CA) erupted for six of her match-high 14 kills to lead the Bulldogs to a 25-13 victory. She also stepped up with two of her five service aces during this stretch.
The Beavers continued to fight in the second set, forcing a knotted score at 17 apiece. However, Redlands' attack surged back into action, uncorking six kills in the final eight points with four different players finding the hardwood.
The third frame was much of the same, as Caltech pushed the Bulldogs to a tie at 18. But the Maroon and Gray quickly pulled away with freshman libero Karly Burningham (Sonoma, CA) serving out the match. Among the final points, the team fired off five kills and benefitted from one Beaver attack error to seal the important sweep.
On the night, Buckner unleashed a .324 hitting percentage, while freshman middle blocker/right-site hitter Cierra Stevens (Palm Springs, CA) registered a .417 showing with six kills. The duo combined for four block assists as well.
Redlands (6-10, 2-8 SCIAC) remains on the road with Friday's 7:30 p.m. match at the University of La Verne. The Leopards are currently in first place in the SCIAC with a 9-1 mark.
