The University of Redlands women's volleyball team kicked off the 2016 season on Friday with a pair of victories at the Pacific Coast Classic in Claremont. With a revamped roster that includes eight freshmen, the Bulldogs impressed in their season debut by sweeping two unfamiliar foes. Redlands took down St. John Fisher College (NY) by scores of 27-25, 25-23, 25-20, before cruising past Rhodes College (TN), 25-20, 25-17, and 25-18.
Highlighting opening day for the Maroon and Gray, freshman middle hitter Sofia Olsson (Cupertino, CA) fired off a team-high 23 kills in the two matches for a combined hitting percentage of .543. She also tallied five service aces, three digs, and three total blocks.
Senior outside hitter Addison Fonseca (Santa Cruz, CA) and sophomore outside hitter Kaylee Burdick (Sun Valley, CA) provided a great attacking complement to Olsson's offense by converting 16 and 12 kills, respectively.
Senior setter Ellie McLeod (Redlands, CA) distributed the ball effectively en route to recording 49 assists for a per-set-average of 8.17.
Redlands (2-0) returns to the Pacific Coast Classic on Saturday to take on George Fox University (OR) at 3:30 p.m., followed by a 5:45 p.m. showdown against Northland College (WI). Both matches take place at Roberts Pavilion on the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges campus.
